I was very fortunate as my diagnosis came with minimal symptoms, though they hit me all at once and it seemed to be a roller coaster of symptoms in the days after. In one way I was glad the three of us went through this at the same time so we could take care of one another and spend time together. Luckily he is a strong teenager and exhibited no symptoms. The INT function simply returns the integer portion of the number (days). If you want to display an existing time value as a text string, you can use a formula like this: =INT(A1)&" days "&TEXT(A1,"h"" hrs ""m"" mins """) We are simply embedding all three numeric values into single text string, joined together with the ampersand (&) operator. However, in this example, since days, hours, and minutes are already broken out separately, you can write your own formula to display days, minutes, and hours like this: =B5&"d "&C5&"h "&D5&"m" Unfortunately, a custom number format like is not supported. This does not affect hours, which will continue to display properly with the number format. However, after 31 days, Excel will reset days to zero. Using "d" to display days in a custom number format works fine up to 31 days. The custom number format used to display a result like "1d 12h 0m" is: d"d" h"h" m"m" The formula in G5 simply points back to F5: =F5 The square brackets tell Excel to display hours over 24, since by default Excel will reset to zero at each 24 hour interval (like a clock). The result is a time like "36:00", since 1.5 is a day and a half, or 36 hours. To display this result as total hours, a custom number format is used: :mm With the number 1 in C5, we can simplify the formula to: =1+0.5 ![]() ![]() TIME returns 0.5, since 12 hours equals one half day: TIME(12,0,0) // returns 0.5 Hours come from column C, minutes from column D, and seconds are hardcoded as zero. On the right side of the formula, the TIME function is used to assemble a valid time from its component parts (hours, minutes, seconds). In the example shown, the formula in cell F5 is: =B5+TIME(C5,D5,0) Because time is just a number, you can add time to days and display the result using a custom number format, or with your own formula, as explained below. That means 12 hours = 0.5, 6 hours = 0.25, and so on. The key is to understand that time in Excel is just a number. In the example shown, the goal is to enter a valid time based on days, hours, and minutes, then display the result as total hours. This means just having a witty related caption or title is not enough.
But I found this much harder than learning the technique first. Had an ODE teacher who always introduced new techniques with a motivating applied problem. One of my big criticisms of most PDE texts is introducing the topic as an engineering problem. This is because "word problems are hard". I'm not sure that starting with an applied motivation (derivation, word problem) is the best way to introduce this topic. I know there are plenty of cool problems involving sequences and series that connect to geometry, physics or finance ( for example here: Examples of arithmetic and geometric sequences and series in daily life ) but I haven't found ones that met my criteria of demonstrating the need for sequences, series and dealing with infinity in an accessible way. Ideally I would like these examples to highlight the importance of dealing with infinities. So my question is if any of you know motivating examples for the study of sequences, series and limits to get high school students interested in the topic? In the last part however, I had to simply state that this infinite summation yields a finite value and that proving this fact and similar things would be the content of the following lectures.Īfterwards I felt like I had presented a solution that wasn't really understandable and that left people rather disappointed than hungry for more. To clarify some of the terms I am using: By sequences, series and limits I mean the basic theory of sequences (explicit formulas, recursive formulas, arithmetic sequence, geometric sequence, divergent and convergent sequences), the simple series (arithmetic series, geometric series, divergence of the harmonic series) and the definition of convergence using an epsilon bound.Īfter doing some research on the web I went with Zenos paradox of Achilles and the Tortoise and after presenting it, letting the students discuss it among themselves and arguing Zenos position, I showed them how the paradox can be resolved with an infinite series. What I had in mind was an application of sequences, series or limits that is easy enough to grasp without already knowing the topic but still reliant on its ideas to motivate its study. ![]() Because I always disliked learning about a topic without having some sense of what problem it addresses or what new possibilities it opens, I wanted to present a motivating example in the first lesson. I currently work as a substitute teacher at a local high school and the topic in one of the classes is sequences, series and limits. ![]() BrainPOP aligns all topics to the standards.Īn immersive learning games platform to support learning in math, sciences, and language arts. The people accused the Emperor Nero for the devastation claiming he set the fire for his own amusement. In the summer of 64, Rome suffered a terrible fire that burned for six days and seven nights consuming almost three quarters of the city. These views provoked suspicion among the Jewish authorities who rejected the group and fear among the Roman authorities who perceived these sentiments as a threat to the Empire. Members of this religious sect spoke of the coming of a new kingdom and a new king. “Beware the Ides of March.A generation after the death of Christ, Christianity had reached Rome in the form of an obscure offshoot of Judaism popular among the city's poor and destitute.“Death, a necessary end, will come when it will come.”.“Cowards die many times before their deaths The valiant never taste of death but once.”.“No one is so brave that he is not disturbed by something unexpected.”įamous quotes from William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.“If you must break the law, do so to seize power: In all other cases observe it.”.“Men willingly believe what they wish.”.“I came, I saw, I conquered.” Or “ Veni, Vidi, Vici,” in Latin. It’s currently housed at Musée Départmental de l’Arles Antique. But we know Caesar's mother lived well into his adulthood, and some historians believe she may have even outlived him, so it's unlikely she underwent a C-section and survived. ![]() The Suda mistakenly says Caesar’s mother, Aurelia Cotta, died during childbirth. The law also stated that dying pregnant women must undergo a C-section to attempt to save the life of the baby. For centuries, there was a law that required C-sections be performed under certain circumstances, which was instated during the reign of Numa Pompilius, who ruled from 715–673 BCE, long before Caesar.Īccording to the law, if a woman died while pregnant, she had to undergo a C-section, because it was against Roman beliefs to bury a mother with her baby in her womb. First, C-sections were already performed in Rome at the time. The story, however, is highly unlikely for several reasons. For when his mother died in the ninth month, they cut her open, took him out, and named him thus for in the Roman tongue dissection is called ‘Caesar.’" "The emperors of the Romans receive this name from Julius Caesar, who was not born. A 10th-century Byzantine-Greek historical encyclopedia called may be the source of the confusion, since it claims C-sections got their name from Caesar himself, stating: An engraving of Julius Caesar from 1860 / GeorgiosArt/ iStock via Getty Images Plusįor centuries, it was believed Julius Caesar was the first baby born via Cesarean section, but that's likely far from the truth. |
